I had been to Northern Ireland several times previously so wanted to do something a bit different this time. I found Game of Thrones Tours which brings you to some of the filming locations. The tour departing from Dublin was Winterfell (Belfast departures had a couple other options). The Winterfell tour takes you to a lot of locations from the first season of the show.
One of the main reasons for renting a car was so that I could go see Father Ted`s Parochial House – not one of those places the tour buses usually stop. You can call ahead and arrange to go on to the property. Or you can hang outside the gates with the other fans all stopping for a photo.
After a fantastic wedding and a great time on Achill I drove my tiny car down to Doolin. Tip: Definitely rent the smallest car you can get away with as the roads get really narrow! Also, avoid the roads prefixed with ‘L’ – while pretty they were about the width of a bike path but handle two way traffic.

The main purpose of this trip to Ireland was to celebrate the wedding of Jen and Keith. I met them both back in 2006 when I attended the Achill Archaeological Fieldschool back in my undergrad days. It was a fun summer full of digging, drinking, and sheep shit. Continue reading
I stopped off at Clonmacnoise (Cluain Mhic Nóis in Irish) on my way out to Achill Island. I haven’t been to this site in over 10 years.
