Zion National Park

We started our roadtrip through Utah, Arizona, California, and Nevada in Zion National Park. The Zion Canyon Scenic drive is only accessible by shuttle buses during the peak season but is open to regular traffic during the winter.

Not all of the trails were open in the winter, and quite a few were ice covered and inaccessible without microspikes. The Riverside Trail (at the end of the Scenic Drive) was open and fairly ice free.

After exploring the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive we headed out on the Zion-Mount Carmel Highway towards Arizona. This road switchbacks up the side of the mountain providing some great views before going into a long tunnel.

On the east side of the tunnel there is a trailhead for the Canyon Overlook. It’s worthwhile to stop and do the shot hike
